Been looking for a good everyday carry knife that is not tactical looking or heavy. More in the camping or Bush Craft style. I saw the price on this Old Timer and watched a few review videos and decided to get one. The knife came in quick and in good condition. No issues with brass pins, lose knife blade or saw blade. Knife was sharp out of the box and everything works well. The leather sheath is of good quality leather and craftsmanship. I do recommend for its price but also because it is a good everyday carry knife depending on what you do on a day to day period. I will use it for everyday activities, camping, and hiking. I do carry a tactical knife for self defense as well.
I have never been a big fan of Schrade's Delrin Knives. I saw a review of both this the 97, and the 96. So I got both. This, the 97 comes with a pouch. The 96 does not. A bit silly as they are both almost exactly the same size. The Delrin is only slightly different. I love both. I like the Tweezers and Pick. They fit well into the frame and of course I broke a nail trying to get them out. So yeah, they are quite secure! No worries of them falling out! I know Delrin is virtually indestructible and as a Walk-about knife these are almost perfect! I live in the high dessert and know from experience that pulling cactus spines from your boots (or Dog!) is a LOT easier with a good Spike and Tweezers! I just wish they had included the correct Pouch with the 96!
They used to be American made, but got sent to China now. That said, I was surprised by the quality of this knife. It was well beyond my expectations. It came shaving sharp...literally. The blade has smooth, crisp action. The saw locks, and also has smooth, crisp action, with sharp, well made, teeth. Priced in the $20's it's well worth the price.I recommend it, and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.
Bolsters on knife received are a golden color just a bit lighter than brass, not aluminum or steel as in the current picture. I think it looks better this way because they match the pins.Fit and finish are not great, but are not bad for a knife in the $20 price range.Scales appear to be glued on as well as pinned. Some excess glue is visible in the holds for tweezers and pick, but it's a rubbery adhesive that was easy to score and peel off with the tweezers and pick. The tweezers are a single piece of metal. They are easy to adjust by bending. The pick is thin enough to use as a toothpick, and appears to be strong enough to use as a leather punch.Blade came sharp enough to slice standard copy paper.Blade centering is a little off, but not enough to scrape the blade when closing. There is a thin liner lock on the saw blade made from the unsupported center liner that divides the blades. A little pressure on the back of the saw blade does cause it to give a little bit. I wouldn't trust the lock to stand up to much pressure on the back of the saw blade, but that shouldn't be an issue for this size of sawThe knife arrived oily and with crud in the nooks and crannies. The action was gritty. After a cleaning and a bit of mineral oil its decently smooth. For the price (around $20 as of this review), this is a good buy.
The saw on this knife is pleasure to use for making traps, snares and such. Pretty easily 1/2” longer stroke than most others I’ve seen or used takes good edge on blade. Only con would be handle a little squarer than older Usa built Old Timers. All in all good value on a useful tool
Gave this as a gift to my little brother for his first backpacking knife and it was perfect.
Good sharpness and all, but the description says "have confidence the blade won't slip" - the blade doesn't actually lock, the saw does. This makes zero sense. I was out of town and didn't return till 3 days after the 30-day return window and contacted their customer service dept to ask for a return based on this safety issue (had a very close call, could see getting cut with this unlocked blade easily), and was told they wouldn't budge on the return window. Unfortunate considering their description is inaccurate, not a great way to treat customers.
It has a nice little saw and a nice blade
When I got into what's called "bushcraft" today (we just called it camping), I wanted a good blade and a good saw in one pocket sized package. I tried a couple SAK's, and they worked well, but I wanted less 'stuff'. This knife fills the bill quite nicely.
Received today. Blade and Saw look nice. Bought this and a Victorinox - Forester because I wanted the saw to cut wood for a twig stove and couldn't decide between the two products. Teeth on the Old Timer saw feels more aggressive than the Victorinox and the saw blades are almost the same length. I was leaning towards the Old Timer because 1) Old Timer saw teeth seemed better 2) I didn't need all the extras on the Victorinox and 3) Old Timer was a little less $. However when I pulled out the field pick, the pick's handle pulled right off. When I pulled out the tweezers, one side was bent out and the tips of the tweezers had an eighth inch gap. Instead of trying to exchange the Old Timer and hope the replacement doesn't have any flaw, I'm just going to return it and keep the Victorinox that arrived with no issues.
