This is a great value for the money. The case doesn't have a fine fit to the blade but it comes out easily and looks fine when sheathed. I especially like the snap as it's a perfect fit and positioned well to flick open with one finger. The blade comes out smoothly. The leather is a bit dry but nothing a little mink oil or leather treatment won't fix. As far as the knife itself it's of a very high quality with the exception of the edge bevel being uneven, but fixable with a few hours on the whetstone or if you have a wet sharp machine then voila! For the money it's a great and probably collectible piece of the Barbary coast. Very well balanced but not made for throwing, it's way too heavy. Nice brass hilt and the blade is about .100" inch thick. The blade arrived nice and sharp with a very nice finish. It feels heavy and well made. Only 2 complaints are the uneven edge bevel and a slightly dry leather sheath that still looks very good.

  • CDP's Onceagain habit of purchasing

I consider myself a knife collector. I purchased this Schrade - 162OT Old Timer Fixed Spear Blade Knife to add to my collection, but I think I'll use it for a Truck knife. That is I'll keep it in my truck for use when out fishing, in the wooded area around my south Mississippi home and around the dock. I have to say, Shrade knives have been the general standard of knives for my way of thinking for the last 45 years since I owned my first Shrade folding pocket knife, an original Old Timer, I still own. I consider knives tools and some very specific tools, in that they are good for what they are designed for and not much else. Yea, you can keep one on your hip for every use that comes up, as many do, but they are usually for cutting something. You can stick it, slice it or stab it, it is still cutting and this knife is one that can be utilized out in the wet, the garage or for self protection as necessary and the stainless blade can take and dish it out. It's attractive with the boot knife look that dagger pointed knifes promote, with a look of dread to those gazing down the shaft from the pointy end. It does have a good balance which I think feels right in the hand. The Old Timer Name hold a sort of reverence to those like me, the utility use of knives having been a part of most of my life, playing and working. The sheath is hefty leather which is made to hold the blade loosely, not a fitted sheath like so many custom made knife sheaths, and this one is almost unnoticed on the belt sitting in the back pocket of my jeans. For the price paid, $21.75 delivered with a Prime membership, and for me was almost too much of a temptation to resist. I won't abuse this knife by throwing it or screwing around with it, rather I'll sharpen it to a shave edge and will expect this knife to last the rest of my life, which won't need to be like forever, as I am already 63. If you need a good boot knife, a utility knife or just a good sheath knife for cutting rope or such use, consider this knife a top contender for you money. When it arrives and you hold it in your hand, you will surely like the feel and it's utility. I love mine.

Some knives have a style to them that make them almost like pieces of art....this isn't one of them. Its possibly the ugliest knife I own. That being said it's a great workhorse of a knife. It can take & hold a razor sharp edge & is sturdy enough for almost any task you could throw at it. The full size handle provides a good grip. Being a single edge blade it can be used for many things that a double edge knife can't. The only real issue I have with this knife is the sheath. For a "Boot" knife it has a cheapish poor quality leather belt sheath. While the knife is a great value you might want to consider purchasing a different sheath. If the sheath was better it would be a 5 Star review.

i had been looking for a small knife i could carry all the time, i finally settled on this after looking at alot of other options. after using it regulary for a week im really glad i choose this one. the spear point and flat grind really get the job done. it isnt flashy or gaudy, all business and utility which is what i wanted. the stainless steel works well, vary stainless and after a few day of using it at work and in my free time (i randomly cut things up and whittle alot) it needed a quick strop on a ceramic rod. it came back to a razor sharp edge easy. the one thing i dont like is that ive seen people online knock the brass pins loose to find out there are really screws underneathe. that is a blatent false advertising. that one thing aside it is a useful tool. the sheath is alright. not paper like somepeople have mentioned but also not high quality leather ether. it holds the knife on my belt well and is comfortable so it doesnt bother me. overall i think it is a great buy for 20 bucks. i plan on using it all the time.

I don't often do this but though this knife deserves it. I own a large number of knifes from variety of manufacturers. I bought this out of a whim along with two other knifes all different. I like using a belt knife as apposed to a folder but I do own a nber of them too. But this knife has been a complete surprise. It has become my go to knife for everyday use. I have used it for any and everything and it is still sharp and holding it's edge very well. Also the shieth has also been a surprise as well. Most times when I buy a knife I make my own shieth for it. As most shieths manufacturers supply are junk or I just don't like the way it fits on your belt. But this one is just perfect for this knife and it too is holding up very well.So if your looking for a good knife that doesn't break the bank this is it.

I WANT to love this knife. It is great looking and feels solid. BUT the blade was not only dull but blunt as well. The tip was actually round and I don’t want to try to sharpen it up and lose so much metal. This was an anniversary gift from my wife, so I won’t return it, but I’d return it if I just bought it myself.Additionally, the sheath is almost broken where it attaches to your belt, and it feels very cheaply made.

Excellent knife for the price!!!! Sharp out of the box... comparable to some $50 knives in my collection... this is a good size for edc... Love it so much I have ordered micarta scale blankes to make better handle...that cost more than the knife itself... awesome, there is a reason granddaddy carried old timers!!!! Now I'm not saying it's a busse but an excellent knife... And if you lose it in the woods, so inexpensive just buy another...

I was pleased to see that the word, "CHINA" is not stamped on the knife ( although USA isn't either). The material appears to be of SCHARADE standards. I don't like stainless steel in a knife blade, but this appears good, sharpens without leaving a wire edge, although it is tempered very hard. (doesn't look like stainless, but the product description says it is) I fixed the leather sheath by taking it apart and trimming off half an inch, forming the top and re-sewing. Summary: I should have bought two

I have had this knife for over a month and have gone backpacking a few times with her on my belt. It's a very attractive knife with a wonderful balance which just begs to be thrown. Now I'm no knife thrower but given the weight and balance I thought it would best be for me to throw the knife like a "missile", just overhead like a baseball and then release/and point at the target(not end over end she just flys straight). Voila! She travels well and many a dead tree suffered a fatal blow with the 1620 going deep into the wood. I felt like John Wayne on "The Big Trail". Wow. Of course I often did not get it quite right and "bang" the knife bounced off the wood (at times directly back at me, be careful!) and in short order the pins (which are not brass, only brass covers) came off as well as the small brass covers, Old Timer Name tag and fracture of plastic handle. This didn't stop me, I just taped the knife up with first aid tape and when back home I replaced the pins with 5/16x3/4" tension pins, epoxyed the thing together, and then wrapped electrical tape on the handle. She's pretty bomb proof now and if you are going to throw this knife you should just start by disassemblying the handle and epoxy gluing the entire thing. I used this knife in the backcountry in cutting off a root under my tent; nice thick blade for ugly work such at that. Very nice and comfortable shief as well; rides well on the belt. The key to understanding this knife is it's under $20!! What a value, if you modify as I have outlined you'll love the thing and you too can pretend to be The Duke on The Big Trail (great movie by the way).

For a $20 Chinese boot knife, it's decent with 1 fatal flaw. The knife itself is surprisingly good--full tang, Delrin handle slabs nicely blended to the tang and guards--no gaps on mine, 7Cr17 steel (Chinesium knock-off version of 440a,) full flat grind that's not too thick behind the edge--still it could be a little thinner IMO, nicly shaped handle without ridiculously large guards that ruin boot carry; nickel silver guards, pins, and nameplate. The knife came somewhat sharp but not what I would call razor sharp--easy enough to touch up. Although made in China mine doesn't state Country of Origin anywhere on the knife---just Schrade, 162OT, and Old Timer as the only markings.Considering it's only $20, the knife itself is probably worth giving 4 or 4.5 stars to--most knives in this price range aren't nearly as well designed or made. The sheath is beyond bad. Poor quality leather, slotted cut outs for a retention belt instead of loops (meaning it'll wear out in weeks of carry instead of years,) no incorporation of leather welts or even a kydex insert (the knife will cut right through the sheath when sharp--and bear against the outer leather when inserted/removed) no drain hole, and a loose, rattly fit of the blade that's held in by a single snap on a leather loop that itself is riveted in place--meaning 2 separate steel rivets will grind against the knife's nickel silver guards when the blade is carried in the sheath--one on each side.Worst of all--besides the low quality and boneheaded rivet placement is that this is not a boot knife sheath at all.On a knife that's called a boot knife they give you a sheath that's designed for belt/waist carry. If you want to use this as you know, an actual boot knife, you'll need to buy a proper sheath 1st that's made for boot and/or ankle carry along with much better retention as well. So, we have a 4+ star knife with a 1 star sheath, 3 stars overall.
