I've had mine for 3 years now and it works perfectly for steeling a knife and realigning it's edge.
This sharpener works extremely well.
Easy to use
I bought this for my husband as he used to take his with him horseback when we would go hunting and somehow he lost the honesteel and still has his scabbard so I bought him a new one. For Christmas. I know he will be very happy
Its a slab of metal, so I guess its well made? All joking aside, I get mixed results with this item. sometimes it really helps other times it completely dulls the blade. I will chalk that up to my inexperience and I can probably improve my technique because when it works ...it really works. So my incompetence aside, for those who may already be an expert at using a Hone steel, you will probably like this one. the leather sheath is nice and the snap has a stud in it that prevents the steel from falling out, and if you reverse the steel in the stud it turns the sheath into a handle. pretty slick. I'll keep practicing, but some more instructions would be great. the instructions basically say to drag your blade in a stropping motion, and the Schrade video on youtube for this product says pretty much the same which leaves one unanswered question. There's some pretty intentional geometry to this thing, if its used basically like a strop why all the angles? the tip tapers to a point and the bevel begins at a defined point on both sides symmetrically. why take the time to do that if there is no point in doing so? and the edges are rounded instead of flat. kind of sucks if you plan to use this as a striker for a ferro-rod but there is only 2 reasons I can think of, 1) to make it more comfortable to grip, but as I mentioned earlier, its designed to grip by the leather sheath. 2) maybe its to be rounded to simulate a butcher's steel of you want to steel your blade on a rounded edge instead of a flat one. Either way, there seems to be more to this tool than meets the eye and I don't know why the manufacturer would want to keep it a mystery. Any old salts out there that have solved the enigmatic HoneSteel please chime in, I'd love to hear some input so I can get the most out of my tool.
Right out of the box, one of the burrs on the edge bit me. You would have better luck using a chainsaw file to hone your edge than this. So poorly manufactured that it is sticking to my clothes. I’m gonna smith out all the edges with a diamond stone and see if I can make something useful out of this abomination. Should have stuck with my instincts an bought a piece of HSS bar stock and used that instead.
This sharpening steel was used by my daddy in the 70's and I got one back then. I remember taking it to school and sharpening knives for my friends and football coaches. My dad said, Be careful you'll wear it out! One of the few times my dad was wrong. I still use that same steel now and that's... 45+ years.Bought these to pass along to my sons and son-in-law so they'd stop bringing their stuff to me to sharpen. Now they have their own!Glad Old Time brought these back! I should go ahead and buy another to give to my 7yo grandson to pass along the tradition.GREAT PRODUCT!!!
This works wonderfully. It does what it's meant to do.People are unsatisfied with things that work for some reason.Or perhaps they don't use them properly. This works, it's a great hone. I enjoy it, I use it, I love it.Use what works for you, this works for me. It works better than the old rusty one as it has no rust.Good hone.
If I could leave less than one star I would. I have used this same sharpener that belongs to a friend. His sharpener was bought back in the 80s, if you are wanting to buy one thinking you are going to get the same thing as one from that era, I will 100% assure you that you are not. The steel isn't even close to what they used then. I promise you; you are wasting your money buying this product. I will say it has a very nice leather case, but that doesn't get my knife sharp.
Old Timer HS1 Honesteel with Brown Leather Belt SheathI just received this recently, so this review is for a new use product. I like it for it's size and it does help sharpen, where another steel by Klein I own will not really improve the edge of the cutting blade much and I have owned it for over 20 years now. It has a bit of varnish or something on the flat that I don't like much but the short edge is good and seems to hone the edge well at two levels of grit. I like it so far for four stars.
