A good basic trapper style knife, in about an average size, the spey and clip-point blades are about 3 1/8" or so long, reasonably thick at the spine, with a flat primary grind on the blade, before finishing in a fairly steep almost 30 deg final edge grind. The steel is 7CR17MoV or thereabouts, and is actually pretty good, favorably hard, while still superbly corrosion resistant. Honestly it is pretty much equivalent in edge performance to the mid carbon cutlery steels our great and great-great grandfathers used. Easy to sharpen back up on regular stones, meant for use.Otherwise, on my example, fit and finish is good/basic, blades are tight with no play, good snap, and they don't hit the center pin ridge of the spring. Also mine came with an 'Old timer' shield and not the schrade 'bomb' shield, as in the product picture. I have reground the edges on mine, lowering the angle to a butcher-knife like 11 degrees, and lapped them up to a shaving keeness. Since then I have been working the knife hard with cooking, game cleaning and utility tasks. The steel acts like I'd expect. Yes the edge will roll a bit if you try to slice a dinner plate, but easily straightens back out with a steel or fine stone. The knife will accomplish everything any historical trapper knife would do, for several seasons. To make sure for this review, I just went and cut about 6 yards of corrugated cardboard, cross-grain, and the edge was still arm hair shaving sharp- although benefited from 4 passes on .5 micron film afterwards. Not fancy, not elegant, but honest.
I've had it for about a week and have a few words. For starters, Schrade is excellent quality for what you pay. It doesn't have the fit and finish as some of the higher prices knives (Case, Buck, etc...), but it looks nice. If you're a collector, spend a few more dollars unless this is the name you want. The steel, as has been suggested, is some type of modified 440A or thereabouts. It took some elbow grease to get a shaving edge, but it comes halfway sharp if that does the job for you, but I prefer my knives, even my Gerber Dime, to shave. It feels very sturdy, it locks securely, but not so it's dangerous to open. This isn't a locking knife! The blades are held by a spring tension so keep that in mind if you're used to locking knives. It's not hazardous so long as you know how to use this type safely and use a little bit of brain power and caution.Overall, it is a very nice knife, even more so given the $16 price. I would buy another, and in fact the stockman is my next knife. Those fancy assisted opening knives are great, and I use them, but I prefer an old-fashioned jackknife in my pocket when I have two hands available to open it. I even put my assisted open knives away and now carry this and only this.
I'm a life-long Schrade knife fan-boy; holstering Schrade-blades since the early 1970s. Old Timer models have proven tough, hard-working, and sharp. This 94OYT "trapper" is just the right size for my hand; with 3" blades and a convincing "snap" with each open and close. (I'm particularly attracted to its yellow scales.) I like the trapper style spear and castrator blades (that pivot from the same end). If you're looking for a dependable knife with 3 inch snap blades why not consider this Old Timer?
Husband likes it!
Got this for my grandpa he likes this brand. Well Christmas came........ He opened it and said "thanks, but I don't like it I'll probably never use this". Well it's been in his cabinet now for 2-3 months. I would buy this for myself if I used little knives. It's good quality, sharp blades, slick looking. I guess some people just don't like nice things.
Way less costly than Buck or Case. Nice sharp knife for the money.
This knife has no lock feature! It has very sharp blades out of the box. and fits my hand nicely! Did I say it was sharp? YES!
The one they sent blades are skewed over hitting inside of liners. And yellow grips are gapped and pulled away , not flush. And one blade wobbles. Is this used or a 2nd. I would like the knife if it was made correctly. NEXT!!! Got a replacement knife to give a chance and after 10-20 opening of blades the one is grinding or galling so bad I’m afraid I’ll cut myself because it’s crazy hard to open and close. Should I try a THIRD?????!!!
A nice little knife
Classy and functional. Looks great, holds up and feels natural in your hand. Replaced a Kershaw locking knife that I snapped the blade on using as a pry bar.
