My Dad had the same one for years. He gave it to me a while back and I keep it in my hobby room. He lost the pick before he gave it to me and I would hate to lose the rest of it. Great knife. Both blades come sharp and tend to stay sharp if you’re not abusing them. When they do become dull, it’s easy to put a good edge on them again because that are good quality. Some things I have noticed. The tweezers are made of a thinner gauge metal and lack the springy tension that the older ones had. I compared them side by side. I couldn’t compare the picks side by side, but from memory I know that the old one had a round brass head on it as compared to the square brass head on the new one.All in all, great price and great blades in this folding knife. If I take care of it, I can pass it off to my own child one day.
What I like about the nife is it fits in my hand its extremely Sharp I like the design so but what I don't like is it got some hot spots like the edges like around the pivot area and the inner liner I will take light sandpaper and smooth them out and the one of the blades has a little greedy so I oil them up nicely it opens up a lot more smoothly but overall it's not a bad knife it just needs a little cleaning up thats all
Item was as described
Amazing knife, looks beautiful, and came razor sharp. This knife is tough as they come, this knife cut through 1inch thick ropes, small branches, and small animal joints I would have no doubts field dressing a deer or any animal with this knife. The blade holds its edge nicely but it's not 440 stainless tough which I think is good because it can be sharpened back to literally shaving sharp with no trouble ( as long as you know how to sharpen knives) I would definitely recommend this knife for an avid outdoorsman
Hard to find item in stores, craftsmanship is terrific.
Old Timer 96OT Bearhead Trapper is a 7.4in Traditional / classical styled pocket knife with 3" blades. Somewhat like a Victorinox, it has tools hidden in the handle, tweezers and a punch/pick. I had significant difficulty getting the tweezers out, but after bending them slightly, they are far more manageable. This would be a great EDC knife due to the price, since damaging it would be of minimal concern. If money is tight, this could be a way to go until you have time to identify and safe up for something more.
This is a great pocket knife. It's on the larger side, but if that's not a concern, it's well worth the price. It's well made, and the blades stay sharp as long as you don't abuse them. This is my second bearhead. Unfortunately my first one was confiscated at an NHL game. But I'd had that one over 15 years.
Inexpensive yet solid and razor sharp. I wanted a full size trapper for everyday. The tweezers and punch are a nice addition too.
I'm very satisfied with the knife. However, I'm not so happy with the damage done to the packaging during shipment. I bought this for a gift.
Original review was 3 stars but I downgraded to 2 stars (skip to the end to see why). This knife is OK but that's about it. Another reviewer stated that these Schrade Old Timer knives are as good as the Chinese-made Rough Riders, but I beg to differ. The quality is nowhere near most of the Rough Riders that I own. When the knife arrived it was very dirty with manufacturing debris and oil, the dirtiest of any pocket knife that I can ever recall. Once cleaned up with Q-tips and an old toothbrush, the flaws really became apparent. There are gaps between the Delrin scales and the knife itself, and there is a significant portion where light shines between the spring and one of the internal brass liners. The knife is wider than most two-bladed trappers, probably because some extra scale thickness is needed for the pin/awl and the tweezers contained in the handles. It's as wide as a three-bladed trapper. The awl had to be pried out the first time with a small screwdriver but once out the first time, it was easy enough to slide in and out. When sliding the pin/awl or the tweezers into the handles, they tend to come out dirty with some substance, so I wouldn't feel safe using these in the field to remove a splinter (which I imagine is the primary intended use). The pin or awl on the knife I received is quite stiff and solid and could be used, for example, to scratch initials into sheet metal. The tweezers on mine are perfectly adequate in themselves and quite usable. The rivets in the scales, as others have mentioned, protrude quite far, so much so that if carried in a pocket I'm concerned that the rather sharp edge of the rivet head will tear the lining of my pocket. The blades themselves came reasonably sharp and are made of a decent steel for a pocket knife. Overall I'd say this is a "beater" knife to keep in a tackle box or glove box; however, there are similar knives available showing much better quality control, for about half the price.Addendum: some substance continues to come out of this knife whenever I remove the tweezers, and from between the Delrin scales and the outermost brass liner. I realized why. The fit of the Delrin scales to the knife is so poor, with such wide gaps, that the factory in China tried to fill those gaps with some kind of tarry clay-like material. That is also why the pin/awl had to be pried out the first time I used it; it was glued into the handle with this same "gunk". This knife should have been put in the reject pile. I downgraded it from three stars to two and will be sending it back.
