I didn't want to write this review, I bought this knife looking for a good game processing knife. Supporting American made products is always preferred as well, I would gladly pay another 10 to 20 dollars more for it. That being said there quality assurance/ control didn't catch a defect in my knife.Normally I don't make a big deal about something like this, however when I held it in my hand it did catch my finger. When I inspected it further the cracked handle scale went all the way through the first rivet. Last thing I need to have happen when my hands are covered in blood is for that piece to break off and my hand slip. I'm out west and where I generally hunt is a long drive to a hospital.I contacted the company about the issue, they sent an auto-generated email with a case number but it's been about 2 weeks and still no more information. I sent out a status request email 3 days ago and still no reply. I'm really starting to think thier warranty is just marketing bs.I mean I like the knife and it came pretty sharp, the profile of a sharp finger is perfect for processing small to large game out here. But basically seems like craftsmanship is hit and miss, I must have got a Friday afternoon made knife and QA just wanted to get off work and head home.Any way if they don't get back to me I'll just epoxy it in place and grind the handle down myself. Last time I'll buy an old timer, really was hoping for a good knife. My Dad and Grandfather both carried old timer and Shrade made stockman made knives when I was younger, just thought they'd be good again, not the Chinese stuff they've been known for since the 90's.Probably going to pick up a buck 113 or something made by Tops. Hope you have better luck than I have had with Old Timer.
Mirror bright blade came fairly sharp. A few minutes with a ceramic rod ...very sharp. Will use it in the kitchen for now, performance to be determined. Sheath is decent quality but a bit loose.
I have had the Chinese made cheaper sharpfinger on the farm I worked at for about four months before giving it away to a fellow farmer that still uses it for farming. Been meaning to replace it ever since. I won’t get into it but the general sharpfinger design is a great belt-EDC for just about anything you might encounter except for heavy wood processing and batoning. When camping I pair it with a small Gransfor brux hatchet. This “generational” knife will not be used for farming as that is very harsh on a blade but for skinning as it was intended to be used. She is a looker- cleaner lines than the Chinese made one, nice bone scales, and super duper sharp. I cut into space-time when I unsheathed it! Solid sheath- a set up from a factory buck knife sheath. Very pleased. I would highly recommend getting three- one for your future grown up teen, one to keep pristine, and one as a user! It’s a sharpfinger: you can’t go wrong.
Mine came with very good fit and finish (blade centered, solid lockup, no gaps). One of the pins is a little proud, but everything else is perfect. The blade came extremely sharp. I think this is made by Bear and Son, but I could be mistaken. It is worth the price.
First, the knife is solid. Lockup is good, steel performs as expected for 1095, the materials of the body are well chosen and executed. It really is an old timer worthy of the name from before the brand was sold off. Now, the caveat. It isn't priced right. It's twenty bucks too high at best, and it could stand to be half of what it costs. As much as I'm happy with it in use, as much as I'm happy with the brand having this line made in the US, it simply isn't priced competitively with other knives of similar quality. If you don't care about the price point, and you miss having an old timer knife, or want to share what that used to mean with someone new, it's awesome.
Excellent! Thank you very much.
I’ve always liked Old Timers, 34OT was my favorite for whittling back in the day! Excited that the 5OTG was new and MADE IN THE USA. I realized they were very expensive but I thought a present day Old Timer would be worth the excessive cost $$$ … Wrong! If Bear and Sons is the producer, they need serious help with their QC. They need to take a lesson from Rough Ryder, Queen, or Marbles for QC and pricing!! My first ordered 5OTG came with the Old Timer logo terribly off center and very fat handles … and almost impossible to close. The replacement was unbelievably worse - big gap in the bolsters, proud pins, and seemingly crack bone. Currently struggling with Amazon to return these and get my money back.
Man….this knife really takes me back to a simpler time. My grandpa always had old timers and it’s just great to see these made in the USA and have the look and feel like my grandpas when I was a kid. Fit and finish is great. The look is awesome. It just looks super nostalgic and brings back some of the best memories of my life. I bought this one to create the same memories and feelings I had with my son. I love the generational log it comes with. I’m sure one day someone who owns it can look back and appreciate the previous owners and the history. I highly recommend this knife or any in the generational series made in USA.
I wish it was a little bigger. I'm a big handed man. Very sharp and holds a edge
Edge: Very very sharp. It'll shave you easily. Run your finger gentle perpendicular to the edge and it'll scrape off the outer layer of skin.Quality: Clear hand finish. Very very sturdy. It'll last generations if taken care of. The leather is sturdy and real.Value: It's certainly the most expensive sharpfinger in the market right now (September 2023), but it's also the nicest.Size: Perfect for skinning large game or opening boxes? Idk whatever. The handle fits well in my hand. I wear an extra large glove.Weight: Read the description. What do I look like - a scale? It's got some heft. Why are you still here? The review is over.
